As the days pass Richards headaches get worse but they always clear up as soon as he leaves the house for work and they stay gone while he’s at work only to return even worse when he gets home. Meanwhile Gretchen has a persistent cold and runny nose that never goes away. Later Gretchen notices any children that come over to play with Melvin always get so sick they have to go home. A few years later while Richards headaches have transformed into epileptic seizures and Gretchen has been miserable with various colds, flus and ear infections for some five years. Melvin goes to kindergarten the first day but his teacher informs Gretchen all the children in his school got sick, except Melvin. Gretchen also recovers from her cold as soon as Melvin left for School. But when Melvin comes home from school Gretchen gets sick again and Richard ends up having a seizure. Finally Gretchen realizes the reason everyone in her house or that visits her house always gets sick must be because there is something wrong with her son Melvin and anyone that gets near him gets sick. Gretchen and Richard decide to abandon Melvin in a park. A police officer takes Melvin to the orphanage but as soon as he arrives and is among the others the children get sick one by one. The children in his new school are also sick. The lady running the orphanage finally realizes the children are getting sick because of Melvin. She fudges the list for foster care and Melvin gets taken to live with a foster family. After shuffling through more families who all got sick or died, Melvin realizes he makes people sick and runs away planning to live as a vagabond on the outskirts of a town with a small population in an effort to minimize his negative influence. As Melvin matures his negative influence grows stronger and outbreaks of disease are rampant in town. Melvin decides he must find a more isolated place to live. In Alaska he finds sympathetic Inuit people and their leader take s Melvin into the arctic wastelands. Living in such isolation seems to solve Melvin’s problem until his negative influence becomes so strong the entire state of Alaska, Canada, and the northwestern states are all stricken by rampant disease. The CDC team is surprised to discover the truth about Melvin and after meeting him they hatch a plan to cryogenically freeze him. After Melvin is frozen his negative influence stops and the rampant disease and death comes to an end. After that people refer to getting sic as having: The Melvins.
